You’re in a bar, on the street, or in a situation where some guy gets all riled up and aggressive. He confronts you and pushes you. Maybe he doesn’t want to start hitting immediately, maybe he’s just trying to escalate things, but the intent is obvious.
In the words of Bill Murray, “It’s go time.”

Danno, depends on the kick. If he is coming in with a round house then you step inside of the kick just like the punch. If a front snap ( a lot of people want to push into it. ) you have to divert and deflect allowing it to travel on past you, while you step in and strike to the opening you just made.
Seeing Mr. West standing up in this series (as opposed to sitting down facing the camera, with the table blocking out his torso in the SF/GB series) really lets you see what a stout guy he is. and he's got some super quick hands and reflexes. Add that to the story about dislocating a guy's brain stem with a punch, and I can safely say it would not be a good time having to tumble with him! I would keep my movements slow and deliberate around him, haha. Great series and info for an average person like myself.
Great punch defense tips. How would you handle if the initial action is a kick because some guy thinks he's a ninja?
what about the using the entire hand to cover and push the attackers face / head out of the way when re-engaging from the initial push? And using power from your hips to propel him backward?
Good solid advice, a few thoughts to take or ignore you see fit - getting into the other guys space is always good, but the instinct will always been to fight outside the punch/kick range - a kick to the knee can floor an attacker just as easily and reduces the time you are on one leg. - when/if using a knee kick, control the head the attacker will resist and it gives you good stability - look out for improvished weapons in a bar, hot liquids in the face, salt shakers things like that But really good "gutterfighter" stuff there. Well done.
